Brainsport Times May. 25, 2016
Before we get to the interview - all the best to everyone participating this weekend!
Tara: Having won the Saskatchewan Marathon six times, you have some invaluable experience heading into this weekend's race. On the flip side, there are a whole lot of runners out their eagerly anticipating their first Saskatchewan Marathon. Do you have any advice for first-time participants?
Brian: Don't go out too hard. All of us runners, at a certain point in the race, enter our fatigue-form state and if we go out too hard and can't maintain our form we're going to fall apart. It's easy to go out way too fast; it takes a lot of discipline to hold back in the first part of a race. But it pays off in the last half of the race regardless of the distance you're running (5K, 10K, half-marathon, marathon)
Tara: What advice do you have for more experienced runners?
Brian: The same thing.
Tara: At Brainsport it's common to hear people ask you if you think you're going to win again? How does this question make you feel?
Brian: It certainly adds some pressure to my race to have this expectation that even at the age of 46 I'm still competitive. There's a lot of talented local runners like James Funk, Brendan Lunty - not to mention this year some of the Ukrainian runners are coming back. In addition there is a rumour that there may be some Kenyans and Ethiopians coming in.
So, I wish myself luck, but I wouldn't bet on me. Of course, if there's an opportunity to do well and place well, then I'll seize that opportunity, but just like any other person out there I'm going to run the best race I can run.

Tara: What shoe will you be wearing for this year's race?
Brian: The New Balance Fresh Foam Zante (Breathe). They are light and fast. The Zante is available at the New Balance store, and we'll also have it available at the Saskatchewan Marathon Race Expo on Saturday at Prairieland Park.
Tara: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Brian: It's critical, when you can, to say thank you, or smile, or wave to volunteers on the on the course, and before and after the race. There's a lot of people who are up all night to make this event happen, so I try to show my gratitude for the hundreds of people who give of their time.
