Brainsport Times Mar. 9, 2016

Thanks to everyone who came out to run and volunteer at the Brainfreeze on Sunday — it was a beautiful day!

Looking ahead at the 2016 racing schedule, there's a lot to get excited about, including the 38th Saskatchewan Marathon. This race is top of list for many runners in Saskatchewan and beyond. In this week's Q&A we speak with its race director, Kim Ali, to learn a bit more about the event.

Q&A with Kim Ali

Tara: For those who are perhaps new to Saskatchewan, or new to running, could you tell us more about the race's history and how it came to be such a marquee event?

Kim: We are runners and walkers and we volunteer at races! The dedicated race committee has a vision to improve every year through a strong community focus and ongoing communication with past participants. A small number of running enthusiasts started the event in 1979, and it has grown to what it is today by building strong relationships and staying ahead of trends. And we don’t leave you stranded after the race — you can reach someone from the committee year-round to sort out any dilemmas.

Tara: Race day itself leaves almost nobody behind, with several races to choose from. Would you mind elaborating on this?

Kim: Fast, flat and fun is our mantra. The event has morphed into what runners want today - marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K because we truly listen - to participants, sponsors and the volunteers and we respond as best we can. Want to run in special gear? No problem. Need a ride to the start line? Check out the shuttles. Can’t finish the race? Our communications team makes sure you get a ride back to the finish line.

Tara: How does a beginner runner chose which race to participate in?

Kim: Start local — try to run where you are familiar with the surroundings. Join a Run Club in your city. Find one with an enjoyable route, or choose a place you like to visit, or an event that benefits a charity you support. Check out event ratings and comments from others that have run that race. The Saskatchewan Marathon runs through the picturesque Meewasin Valley, supports the Meewasin Trail and of course, Saskatoon is a great place to visit!

Tara: The Saskatchewan Marathon isn't only about the race day. It involves a certain amount of training prior to the big day in order to be prepared. How important is the training? And what advice do you have for beginners and even those more experienced?

Kim:
Training is key to an enjoyable experience on race day. Brainsport has great training programs, and their experienced staff can help you to find something that works for you or check our website for home training programs. However, race preparation is not just about training. Become familiar with the course and location of water stations, bathrooms and what types of energy drink and gels are provided.  Wear clothing that you have run in before — nothing is more irritating than a chaffing running skirt or shorts. Plan your travel to the start line and leave plenty of time for a bathroom stop before the race — nervous and shy bladders are common in all levels of runners. And remember it’s about running your race and striving for a personal best.

Tara: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Kim: New for the 2016 Saskatchewan Marathon are long sleeved New Balance tech shirts, a virtual race bag, and a brand new course.  Participants won’t run into traffic snags if they refer to our driving and parking maps. Our volunteers are golden — if you can’t run this year, you’ll really enjoy being part of the action as a volunteer.
