Brainsport Times Mar. 7, 2018

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Brainsport Brainfreeze over the weekend, and to all those who competed and volunteered at the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Track and Field Championship!

In this week's Times we're going to be learning about an upcoming Brainsport Running Academy Course that is sure to help you, or perhaps someone you know, get well on their way to reaching their running goals. Kim Galus is coaching the Learn To Run course starting in April. This course will prepare you for the 5K event at the Saskatchewan Marathon on May 27, and also serves as a launching point for your future running goals, whether it be to race, or simply get out to run for fun and fitness.

We're excited about what this course has to offer, so let's get right to our Q&A with Kim to learn more!

Q&A with Kim Galus

Tara: Let's start off by addressing some of the fears people may have in registering to take part in a Brainsport Running Academy course. It seems that it can be an intimidating step to take for some. What do think can help people get over their fears?

Kim: To me, a good way to get over these fears is to join with a friend or family member. I think some of the fears come not knowing anyone and having a familiar face can make you feel less alone when you're starting something new.

Tara: Running in a group has many benefits, could you touch on some of those that you find of particular importance, in your experience?

Kim: For me, one of the biggest benefits is the motivation that comes from being in a group. There are going to be days when you don't want to run but knowing that other people are expecting you makes it so much easier to get out there and I find it's never as bad as you thought it would be. Another great benefit is being able to discuss your progress with other people who are in the same position. It's a great way to get to know people better and reassures you that you aren't alone.

Tara: What will your main focus(es) be on for this course?

Kim: My main focuses for this course will be to get the participants to enjoy running and to show them that anyone can be a runner. Running can be hard, and I think a lot of people get discouraged when they first try it because they can't do it for very long but this program starts with only 30 second intervals of running and builds from there. The slow progression not only makes it more manageable for people, it also helps prevent some of the injuries people associate with running.

Tara: Who would you encourage to sign up?

Kim: I would encourage everyone to sign up! The program is designed for the absolute beginner so don't worry if you have no experience - I can guarantee you'll be able to do it. Whether you've run in the past and are looking to get back into it or are looking to get active for the first time, the program is a great way to get outside as the weather warms and get moving!

Tara: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Kim: I think the only thing I'd like to add is that if you're contemplating signing up, you should! You never know, you might end up really enjoying it and continuing running once the program is completed!

If you want to get excited about throwing on your socks and getting out there every day, then be sure come into the store and pick up a pair (or two).
