We all know winters in Saskatoon can be painfully cold. Imagine not having the proper clothing to keep you warm - it's a tough thought to hold onto comfortably. In this week's Times we're going to bring some attention to a way you can help make those people in need a little warmer this season.

Jan Stirling is here to tell us about the donation program she's set up this year.

So let's get right to it!

Q&A with Jan Stirling

Tara: Tell us a bit about how you got started in collecting socks for those in need, and how you've now transitioned over to other warm must-haves this year?

Jan: The sock collection started last year with an appeal from the Lighthouse stating that socks were the number one clothing need for the homeless. This year The Bridge Fellowship on 20th Street, was asking for donations of mitts, scarves, gloves and toques for their family Christmas boxes. My husband Ken and I, plus a group of friends thought this would be a great way to help bring warmth to the heads and hands of the families there. This is also a donation that keeps on being needed throughout the Winter season.

Tara: What was it about the Bridge on 20th that caught your attention?

Jan: The Bridge on 20th provides meals and a warm, safe place for people on the streets of Saskatoon. We are one of several groups that help to provide meals for the Kids Club at The Bridge. As the winter season sets in, the need for warmth for the head and hands is very obvious.

Tara: For those wanting to donate - what should they keep in mind - and where do they make the donation?

Jan: Donations may be dropped off at Brainsport in the blue bin marked “mitts” up until December 15. Donations are also welcome at our house (122 Wickenden Crescent) in the blue box marked “mitts” on the doorstep. These items should be new and can be for all ages. Gloves, mitts, toques and scarves would be very welcome!

Tara:
What is your hope for Warm Up the Bridge Christmas in terms of the impact it will have on people's lives?

Jan: Our hope for Warm up The Bridge for Christmas and the Season is to raise awareness of one of the many centres in Saskatoon for people in need and to provide something that can actually warm up hands and heads this season.
