Brainsport Times July. 08, 2015

Brainsport is celebrating its 24th anniversary on July 13! We thought this would be a nice opportunity to get caught up with Brian — and a chance to chat about all the happenings of this past year and what lies ahead for the next.

Before we get to that though, all the best to everyone running the EY River Run Classic on Sunday!

Q&A with Brian

Tara: It's been a big year with the moving of the store to its new location and the opening of New Balance. What's the greatest pleasure this year has brought you?

Brian:
This past year has been both equally exciting and terrifying. Lots of decisions, planning and building made for a very full year. But, to answer your question a Brainsport customer recently commented to me about our new location. He said, "I travel all of the world and always check out the local running store. The latest version of Brainsport is the coolest running shoe store I've ever seen." This feedback helps me sleep better at night.

Tara:
What are your hopes for Brainsport in its 24th year?

Brian: This is the year that we recover from the flurry of activity of last year — renovation, move, and opening New Balance Saskatoon.

Tara: Independent running stores have been given a run for their money in recent years with the emergence of major retailers and online shopping. What's been the key to the success of Brainsport?

july8 15 1 Brainsport co-founders Brian Michasiw and Debbie Harksen.

Brian: The key to our success: we try harder to serve the customer.

Tara: You give back a lot to the community with the shoe donation program and with event sponsorships. At what point did this become an important part of what you do?

Brian: From the start of Brainsport our goal was to leave our community better off than before.

Tara: We can't let you go without asking about your own running. You were out for the Saskatchewan Marathon with a calf injury. Any race dates set?

Brian: It was disappointing to not run Saskatchewan this year. I had a calf injury that prevented me from running. It is feeling better. I would love to run a fall marathon, perhaps Toronto.
