Brainsport Times Aug 16, 2017

Before we know it we're all going to be settling into our fall routines. Some of you may be interested or know someone interested, in adding some more running into this year's routine, and we may just be able to help out with that!

The Brainsport Running Academy is offering a Learn to Run course perfect for those looking to challenge themselves, learn a lot, and have fun with other people also new to running. Our upcoming Learn to Run course is being coached by Brainsport's Kim Galus - Kim has a ton to offer, and great energy to bring to newcomers.

In this week's Q&A we're speaking with Kim to learn more about her background and what her hopes are for the participants of the Learn to Run course.

Kim Galus

Tara: Let's start by learning more about you, as a runner. What kind of experiences are you bringing to participants of this upcoming Learn to Run course?

Kim: Most of my experiences in running have been in Saskatoon, but last summer I traveled to Iceland to run my first full marathon. To me the most important experience I'm bringing to the participants is that I myself am just getting back into running. This spring while training for the Saskatchewan half-marathon I fractured my ankle, after some time spent healing it I've spent the summer getting back into it. I think this experience allows me to better relate to what the participants are going through.

Tara: As someone who overcame the odds to become a runner, how does that contribute to your ability to coach well?

Kim: Something that may come as a surprise to a lot of people is that I have a mild form of cerebral palsy. I spent most of my childhood with a brace on my left ankle and was told I may always walk a little different. I don't think any of the professionals I saw as a child thought I'd be running the way I am. I think this positively contributes to my coaching because I understand that everyone has their own challenges and abilities but everyone is able to succeed at their goals.

Tara: What are you hoping each of the participants of the Learn to Run course will accomplish over the duration of the course? And what do you want them all to takeaway with them?

I hope all the participants accomplish the goals that brought them to the Learn to Run course, whether that's to run a certain distance, become healthier, etc. I want all the participants to takeaway an appreciation for running, and I hope this leads them to continue their journey in running.

Tara: You have a particular interest in nutrition. Tell us about your schooling, and how it plays a role in your running, and coaching?

Kim: This year I will be going into my fourth year of post-secondary and my second year of nutrition in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the U of S. I think as I learn more on my journey to becoming a registered dietitian, it plays a bigger role in my running. As for coaching, I definitely want to be able to guide the participants towards healthy decisions by helping them find credible resources or looking into any questions they have.

Tara: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Kim: The only thing I want to add is I hope everyone who signs up has fun and if you're hesitating or nervous I urge you to take the take the risk and sign up because you won't regret it.
